SUMMARY

A YA novel from USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen.

Never ask a question unless you’re sure you want the truth.

I’ve been listening to my father sing for my whole life. I carry him in my pocket on my mp3 player. It’s just that we’ve never met face to face.

My mother would never tell me how I came to be, or why my rock star father and I have never met. I thought it was her only secret. I was wrong.

When she dies, he finally appears. Suddenly I have a first class ticket into my father’s exclusive world. A world I don’t want any part of – not at this cost.

Only three things keep me going: my a cappella singing group, a swoony blue-eyed boy named Jake, and the burning questions in my soul.
There’s a secret shame that comes from being an unwanted child. It drags me down, and puts distance between me and the boy I love.

My father is the only one alive who knows my history. I need the truth, even if it scares me.

Michel’s Review

One month shy of eighteen, one year shy of college, and eighteen long years of being a dirty little secret is more than Rachel Kress can handle. She always knew who her famous father was but her mother would not share how she came to be. She always wanted to meet him and become a part of his life but now that the opportunity has come at a high price. She has lost her mother and became an orphan in a matter of months. Technically she will be an adult in a matter of a month but she’s not quite ready for adulthood. When her father Freddy Ricks aka Frederick Richards shows up with the offer of help, how can she say no. This is her chance to get to know the man that sired her and turned his back on her.

Like most things in life there are two sides to every story. Rachel is a casualty. She is also a gift for Frederick Richards, a man who lost himself many years ago to become Freddy Ricks. He’s not perfect and he’s not trying to become the perfect father. He just wants to get to know his daughter and show her all sides to his very flawed personality.

Both Rachel and Frederick are going through life changes. Their lives are on very separate paths that are colliding together in a imperfect yet beautiful way.

Sometimes it’s not about forgiveness but about acceptance. The willingness to open your heart to love without conditions. Loving is never a bad thing, it is what makes you a better person.

Sarina Bowen has this gift of bringing characters to life in a very realistic, humbling way. I think every reader of every age can identify with the characters. While one character is just beginning her path in life the other is learning to change theirs. I absolutely loved this book.
