Synopsis:

Bitsy

I might be only nineteen, but I know what I want. It’s Leka Moore. I don’t care that he took me in when he was barely more than a kid himself. I don’t care that he raised me. I don’t care everyone thinks being with him is wrong. I know we belong together, and the only person I need to convince is him.

Leka

I found her in the corner of a dark alley. If I hadn’t taken her with me, she would’ve died that night—or maybe worse. Before I knew it, she became the light in my dark life, the haven from the madness. I watched her grow up. I tried to teach her right from wrong. Now that she’s an adult, I’m feeling things that no good man should ever feel. But then…I’ve never been a good man. I have a chance at redemption by saving her from the greatest danger of all—me.

Michel’s Review

I have been reading Jen Frederick’s book since she first published the Woodlands series in 2013. I have enjoyed experiencing her growth as a writer throughout the years with her expansion from new adult to dark romantic suspense and enthralling young adult novels. Whether her theme is sports romance, spoiled teenagers, college co-eds, russian mafia, or sexy millionaires, she has undeniably held me captive with each story. Her latest release Want You brings her writing full circle and has a bit of every genre in it.

Leka and Bitsy are not your typical characters that meet in unusual circumstances that bring their lives together. They are both children living in the streets and struggling to survive their world. Leka became immersed in the street criminal world as a soldier before he turned twelve. When he finds a small five year old girl hiding in the shadows, he’s determined to protect her and keep her alive at all costs. Thus begins their story which goes from survival tactics to family ties. They only have each other. Their commitment to one another is the only thing that keeps them alive in a very ugly world. Leka is determined to keep that world away from their front door. Bitsy is determined to stay by Leka’s side even if it means confronting the monsters at the door.

Jen Frederick once again held me captive with her words. Leka and Bitsy’s story came alive. Their happily ever after wasn’t easy but it was worth every ugly moment they had to endure. It made their love for one another unbreakable.

Michel’s Review

With all the negativity going on in today’s world with NFL football and illegal recruiting in college sports, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to dive into this book.  Played by Jen Frederick is the fourth book in the Grid Iron series.  This series focuses on college football players finishing up their college football careers.  For many of them the next step is the NFL, for others it’s stepping into their perspective professional careers.  Either way they are at crossroads in their lives and the pressure is high.

Ty Masters chose to play five years rather than four so he didn’t have to compete with his twin brother Knox in the professional draft since they both played the same position.  He also chose a different college across the country so they could both live out their individual glory rather than share a collective spotlight.  They are extremely competitive with one another but also extremely close.  When his brother went into the draft a year early it took some of the pressure off of Ty but also added a bit of pressure to live up to his brother’s pristine image.  Like most twins, Ty and Knox differ like night and day.  The one thing they have in common is their focus on football, the difference is their approach with that focus.  Unlike his brother, Ty has enjoyed the dating life in college.  While his brother stayed away from women, Ty enjoyed them but never let them come before his game.  He’s gained the reputation of being a crappy, uncaring boyfriend.  He could care less.  The only woman that is important in his life is Ara Martin, his best friend.  With the upcoming draft his agent is pressuring him about everything from his diet to dating.  His agent is concerned about his reputation and how it will affect his draft round.

Ara Martin has been living within her parents shadows after their divorce.  Her father is a renowned sculptor who tends to remarry with every masterpiece he creates.  Her mother is a driven professional that thinks art is a frivolous and insecure career.  She’s also a bit cold hearted with her views on family and marriage.  Ara is trying to carve out her own place in the art world without her father’s influence or her mother’s negativity.  After being a product of numerous divorces in her childhood, she chose to put Ty Masters in the friend department because she valued their friendship too much.

So this book focuses on the final semester of their senior year in college.  Ty and Ara are both struggling in very different ways.  The one thing that is easy in their lives is each other.  From the social media to Ty’s twin brother, a nasty agent, and a rancid ex girlfriend, the pressure has become a hotbed in Ty’s life.  Ara’s determination to prove herself in her own world is hard enough let alone the different types of pressure her parents are separately creating, Ty Masters is the only thing that isn’t a boiling point in her life.  The problem is deep down Ty is a boiling point, she is hopelessly in love with him but doesn’t want to ruin their friendship.  Little does she know Ty is realizing that he is in love with her.  Ty’s approach is like his approach to football, full focus and winning what he wants on his own terms.

Jen Frederick once again scored big with Played.  She showed a very different side to the sport that most fans don’t see and added a breathtaking romance to the mix.  It is a great addition to the series and I think I might love Ty Masters a little more than I loved Knox Masters.

So if you are tired of all the crap going on in real life sports, take yourself to Jen Frederick’s Grid Iron sports world, it will not disappoint.

Michel’s Review

It’s been almost two years since the last book in this series released. The release of Unwritten by Jen Frederick had me jumping with pure joy.  The Woodlands series is one of my all time favorite series.  I have become deeply connected with all the characters in this series and was anxiously waiting for Adam’s book to release.  It was obvious that Adam wasn’t ready to fall in love. After watching his roommates fall hard and find happiness, he finally sees what he is missing.  He’s ready for love and settle down with one woman.

For Adam, love came around at the same time his band got their big break.  They have been invited on a big concert tour that could open the door for bigger things.  Meeting “the girl” right before the tour is a complete bummer.  That girl being his bandmate’s younger sister is even worse.  To make matters even more difficult is the girl has a ton of baggage that is out of her control.  She has a dangerous stalker threatening her life.  What’s a guy to do with all of that at once?

Landry goes on tour with her brother and his band because her stalker is out of jail and threatening her once again.  She’s attracted to Adam but her brother has made it abundantly clear that his bandmates are off limits.  She doesn’t want to wreck their opportunity for bigger things by coming between the band members.

Adam and Landry were meant for one another. Nothing is going to stand in the way of their feelings.  They will just have to figure out how to deal with her brother, the band, the upcoming fame, and get rid of the stalker.  Their love is worth fighting for.

I absolutely loved this book.  Seeing the other side of Adam and his true personality was wonderful.  He is truly a great, sensitive man that knows how to treat a lady like she is the most precious thing in the world.  That in itself was quite surprising because of his manwhore reputation in the previous books.  Landry was a delightful, quirky, smart heroine that won my heart.  The members of the band were just as delightful.  Hopefully they will get their own books too.  Jen Frederick has once again written a fantastic book.

Michel’s Review

Downed by Jen Frederick is the book fans of the Gridiron series have been waiting for.  JR “Ace” Anderson has been a prominent player in the first two books of the Gridiron series.  He’s one of those characters that readers either hate or love, depending upon the situation at hand.  The one thing that stands out is no one really knows who Ace really is.  He doesn’t allow anyone close enough to see below the surface.  His choices seem self serving at most times, but they are not for the assumed reasons readers are led to believe.  Readers got to see a vulnerable side to Ace in Jockblocked and they also got to see his egotistical side in full mode.

Ace Anderson was run out of his old school, Western U.  It wasn’t because of his performance as a quarterback on the field.  He delivered two championships for the team. It was because the coach hated him with a passion for dating his daughter.  It didn’t matter that his daughter was a willing participant or that she was just as wild as Ace.  Ace committed the worst sin a player could commit.  The coach’s vendetta not only hurt Ace’s pride but also his potential for playing his senior year of college.  Ace was being forced to give up his position as quarterback to a future freshman hotshot for another offensive position or sit the bench.  This vendetta not only cost him the respect of his teammates but also added to the divide with his best friend Lucy Washington.  The only choice he could make was transferring to Southern U for his senior year of college.

New beginnings aren’t always what they are cracked up to be.  He is having trouble bonding with his new team. On the field they are a solid unit but off the field he is the odd man out.  They have heard the rumors of his past experiences. They are going to make him earn their respect.  Ace is going to have to change his ways if he wants to become a true member of the team.  Bryant Johnson knows a project when she sees one.  Ace Anderson needs her help and he needs it fast if they are going to become a championship team.

Bryant Johnson is the coach’s daughter.  A big red flag for Ace Anderson.  His past experiences have left him charred.  Here at Southern U attitudes are quite different.  His teammates and his coach are encouraging him to date Bryant.

Bryant is known for her dating projects.  Her objective to make her boyfriends better men. She prepares them to be better boyfriends, better teammates, and better individuals.  After she fixes her project she moves onto the next one.  Ace Anderson is proving to be much more difficult than she thought.  Her intentions for Ace are changing as she gets to know the man beneath the surface.  He still needs a lot of work but he is a keeper.

Bryant is known for her generous heart and selfless giving.  She takes care of others.  Who takes care of her? Ace sees the vulnerable woman beneath the shiny surface.  That’s the woman that has his heart.  This time he wants to win the girl’s heart.  He wants to take care of her and share his life.

Jen Frederick scored big with Downed.  This book was a true game changer for Ace Anderson.  Ace won more than his third college championship.  He won my heart.
